The birth of new theater is one of the most exciting artistic labors there is. More than any other art, it relies so much on external elements to convey it. A playwright gestates an idea, a story, a complete piece of literature in his or her head for years sometimes, and then turns that finished work over to an entire network of people: actors, set designers, musicians, sometimes directors and more depending on the size of the theater.
But if you find the right theater, one that nurtures and honors the spirit of a playwright’s intentions, the outcome is downright revelatory. That’s the gift of Ochre House Theater, 825 Exposition Ave., an alternative theater that fosters local talent and gives a voice to up-and-coming playwrights like Justin Locklear. Locklear will premiere his new effort Dreamless, a musical that explores the pitfalls of ambition through the story of a brother and sister who run a restaurant together.
